We have been using Reading Eggs for several years now, first with Z who is now 6, and now with his younger brothers. T is 5 and in reception, and R is 3 and will be starting school in September. One of the things I really like about Reading Eggs is how much repetition and practise this programme offers on some of the basic pre-reading skills that children need to master before they are able to move on to blending and sounding out words.

Using reading eggs to work on early reading skills, like phonological awareness , rhyming and listening for beginning sounds

One of my children had difficulty with phonological awareness, and we had to really focus on listening to the sounds and letters to help him master concepts like understanding rhyme, and recognising the beginning sounds of each word. There are lots of games within Reading Eggs that help with these skills, and offer a fun way to practise.

After practising these skills a lot more and getting a solid grasp of those, the concept of blending eventually clicked with my son and he was able to make much better progress in his reading.

Level 1 of Reading Eggs starts off right at the beginning of the reading journey, and teaches children each sound and letter, along with some of the high frequency words that they will come across. The programme is very thorough in covering all of the early skills, and each lesson or segment can be repeated as many times as needed.

I really like how simple reading books are included right from the start too, to give children a sense of achievement by completing their book at the end of each lesson.

Z completed the full reading eggs programme over a year ago, so if you’re interested in the later stages of Reading Eggs then you may like to read that review here. It also covers Mathseeds, which is
