We know we haven’t begun the summer holiday yet, but before we know it, the autumnal half-term will be here and we will all be looking for seasonal activities to do with our kids to keep them occupied.

With this being said, we wanted to show you ten activities you can do this autumn, as a family, whether you’ve booked one of the many October holidays UK destinations have to offer, or you’re staying home for the October half-term.

  1. Pumpkin picking

Embrace the spooky spirit of Halloween by visiting a local pumpkin patch or farm close to your home or staycation accommodation. Let the kids choose their perfect pumpkin and take it back home or to where you’re staying for a pumpkin carving session.

  1. Explore haunted castles

With its rich history, the UK is brimming with haunted castles and spooky sites, perfect for those looking to embrace the spooky season.  You could embark on a ghost tour or visit a haunted castle, for a thrilling family adventure local to your staycation destination.

  1. Harvest Festival

Have a look for places near you or your staycation accommodation that are hosting a harvest festival. Indulge in seasonal delicacies, listen to live music, and participate in traditional activities like apple bobbing or scarecrow making.

  1. Autumnal woodland walks

The UK’s countryside is ablaze with vibrant hues during October, so why not lace up your hiking boots and embark on a scenic trail, taking in the breathtaking autumnal foliage and crisp autumn air? Make it fun for little ones by printing off a woodland scavenger hunt sheet, so they can check off things they see on their walk.

  1. Mazes

Within the autumnal season, many family attractions and local farms open corn and hedge mazes, perfect for families of all ages. Many farms offer additional harvest-themed activities, perfect for a fun-filled day in the countryside.

  1. Bonfire night celebrations

This year, the 5th November is during the week, so many places in the UK will host a bonfire night celebration on the weekend before, within the half-term period. So why not join in the traditional festivities of Bonfire Night? Watch amazing fireworks displays, enjoy hot cider and toffee apples, and marvel at the crackling bonfires.

  1. Apple picking

Whether you’re staying home for the half-term, or heading off on a staycation, it’s worth looking for any local orchards that offer a ‘pick your own’ experience, where you can pick your own apples. Afterwards, head home and bake a delicious apple pie or make toffee or chocolate apples.

  1. Fly kites

The autumnal season usually brings with it, the perfect kite-flying weather. So why not embrace the winds, and head out to a field or the beach and fly a kite?

  1. Explore the indoors

In the UK, we’re used to changing plans due to the weather or having a contingency rainy-day plan. With this being said, why not visit a museum, explore a science centre, visit The Eden Project or catch a family-friendly theatre performance?

  1. Cosy night in

Sometimes, the best family activities are the simplest. Create a cosy movie night at home, complete with hot chocolate, popcorn, and your favourite films for a relaxing evening together.

Whether you’re seeking spooky thrills, outdoor adventures, or cosy indoor activities, the UK offers plenty of opportunities for family fun during an October staycation. Embrace the autumn magic and create lasting memories with your loved ones.
