Rainbow Plaid Pixel Art Tutorial
Turn simple stripes into magical rainbow plaid hearts! This vibrant Valentine’s craft combines bold colors, a pixel-like effect, and layered hearts for a fun, creative project kids will love.
Materials
- Alcohol markers (we used Ohuhu markers in rainbow colors)
- White paper
- Black construction paper
- Colored construction paper in various shades
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil (optional for tracing heart shapes)
Instructions
- Create the Rainbow Plaid Pixel Pattern: Start by selecting your rainbow colors. These are the shades we used - Ohuhu RV180, YR070, GY6, GY1, PB7, RV160 aka Hollyhock, Light Orange, Anise, Pale Green, Pastel Blue and Thistle. A lot of these are from the Ohuhu Pastels set. You don't need to use these exact shades just pick 6 or 7 to make a rainbow.

- Using a piece of white cardstock, draw even stripes vertically or horizontally across the page with your alcohol markers. Allow the ink to dry completely—this is important for achieving the pixelated effect.

- Add the Opposite Layer of Stripes: Once your first layer of stripes has dried, take the same colors and draw stripes in the opposite direction. If you started with vertical stripes, now create horizontal ones, or vice versa. Watch the colors overlap and blend to form a dazzling plaid pixel pattern!

- Cut the Pixel Heart: Once your plaid artwork is complete, use scissors to cut out a heart shape. If you want a perfectly symmetrical heart, fold your plaid paper in half and trace half a heart with a pencil before cutting.

- Here's your rainbow pixel heart

- Prepare the Heart Borders: While waiting for the ink of your plaid stripes to dry, use colored construction paper to cut out larger heart shapes in multiple sizes. These will form a border for your pixel heart.

- Layer the hearts in overlapping colors for a striking effect and glue them all down with a glue stick.

- Assemble Your Artwork: Glue the pixel heart onto the layered heart borders.

- Then, attach the completed design to a black construction paper base for a dramatic backdrop

- Add 3D Hearts: To give your artwork extra dimension, cut out smaller hearts from the leftover construction paper and glue them onto the black background. Only glue the center of each heart, leaving the edges free to pop up slightly for a 3D effect.

- And your rainbow pixel art heart is complete

This Valentine’s craft is a winner for kids and adults alike. Younger kids will love the process of layering and assembling while older kids and teens can experiment with intricate patterns and advanced color combinations.
