There’s something so fun about a card that does more than just open flat, and these Valentine surprise cards are one of those ideas that always get a big reaction. At first glance, they look like a simple gift-style card, but when you unfold them, a cute Valentine character pops into view. Kids absolutely love the surprise element, and they feel really special to give as Valentine’s Day cards to friends, family, or classmates.

Quick heads up – yes, some of the pages say “Christmas” on them. Whoops! Just ignore that part. It’s not on the actual cards just the printable files, and what can we say, we’re only human so sorry about that.

The folding idea works beautifully for Valentine’s Day, and honestly this is one of those card designs that works just as well as a Christmas card, birthday card, or even a general greeting card for lots of different occasions. Once you understand the folding technique, you can reuse it again and again.

These are printable Valentine day cards that feel a bit more unique than the usual store-bought greeting cards, and they’re a lovely alternative to buying something from a shop or adding another item to the cart at checkout. They’re creative, personal, and full of love.

How to Make the Valentine Surprise Cards

Start by printing the pages. Each printable page includes two surprise cards, so you’ll get two finished cards from each sheet. After coloring, cut around each card and follow the dashed fold lines shown on the design.

The folding is what creates the surprise effect. You fold along the top dashed line and then the bottom dashed line, lining everything up carefully so the “gift” section sits neatly on the front. When the card is folded correctly, the top and bottom gift sections hide the picture inside. When you open it, the full Valentine illustration is revealed in the middle.

This is a great little fine motor activity for kids, and once they’ve made one, they usually want to make more. You can also pop the finished card into a small gift bag, use it as part of a Valentine gift, or even turn it into a photo-style keepsake by writing a message on the back.

Coloring Your Cards

One of the nicest things about these Valentine surprise cards is that you can color them however you like. Alcohol markers, acrylic markers, crayons, colored pencils, or even paints all work well. If you’re using markers that bleed, just print on slightly thicker paper or place a scrap sheet underneath.

Because the designs are fairly bold and clear, they work well for younger kids, but older kids and even adults can have fun adding extra details or color themes too. You can make funny cards, cute cards, or more traditional Valentine greeting cards depending on the colors you choose.

You can also find a space to write your valentine’s day card messages wherever you like best.

Make Your Own Version Too

Once you’ve made these, it’s really easy to use the same folding technique to create your own cards. You can draw your own Valentine picture, write your own Valentine’s Day card messages, or even turn it into a birthday or holiday card. This folding idea works for so many occasions and is a great way to make completely unique Valentine cards that don’t look like anything you’d find from Hallmark.
