Crazy Hair Day is such a fun way for kids to express themselves and get creative! It’s a special event where kids are encouraged to think outside the box and try out wacky, colorful, and unique hairstyles that make a statement.
From funky updos to wild colors, the possibilities are endless, and it’s always exciting to see what everyone comes up with. One of our favorite styles is the rainbow hair idea, complete with fluffy clouds, vibrant braids, and a stunning rainbow made from pipe cleaners.
This style works well for long hair and short hair, as long as you have enough to make two little space buns you’re good to go.

I made this crazy hair day idea last week for my daughter’s hair and not only does this style stand out, but it’s surprisingly easy to create and holds up all day long, even through a school disco in the evening, and you don’t even need bobby pins.
Here’s how you can create this amazing Crazy Hair Day look step by step. It’s so easy – if it’s crazy hair day tomorrow at the kids’ school and you are looking for last minute clever ideas, you may just be able to pull this together with supplies you already have in the house. If you want to add color to your crazy hair day hairstyles without using colored hair spray on your child, then this diy rainbow hair will be a great solution.

Rainbow Crazy Hair Day Style
Turn your little one into a walking rainbow with this adorable Crazy Hair Day look! Complete with fluffy cloud buns, a vibrant pipe cleaner rainbow, and colorful braids, this fun hairstyle is equal parts crazy and fabulous and it lasts all day long.
Materials
- Parting comb
- Hair gel (optional)
- Hair ties / Hair bobbles (2 small, 2 larger) for the space buns
- White fluffy scrunchies x 2 - or any 2 scrunchies and cotton wool and a hot glue gun
- Pipe cleaners in rainbow colors
- Optional - rainbow hair thread. If using this, you will need extra small hair ties and small hair elastics + crochet hook
- Optional - rainbow hair clip for extra decoration
Instructions
- Start with Space Buns
Begin by creating two space buns on the top of the head. Divide the hair into two sections using a rat tail comb and secure each with a hair tie. - Then, twist each section tightly and wrap it around itself, securing the buns with another hair tie.
- If your child has long hair and you want to keep the size of the space buns manageable, you will split the hair into four sections and use the front two for the space buns while leaving the two at the back for later. If your child has short hair, then make two bunches and use all of the hair for your two space buns. Use gel to smooth the front of the hair if you like.
- Add the clouds - To make the buns extra fun and fluffy, cover each with a white fluffy scrunchie to act as clouds. Last minute diy - if you don't have white fluffy scrunchies then you can get out the hot glue gun, and some cotton wool and diy this onto any scrunchie you have at home.
- Create the Rainbow
Take several pipe cleaners in rainbow colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) and bend them to form a curved rainbow shape. Twist the ends of the pipe cleaners together to secure the shape. - Next, position the rainbow over the space buns and bend the ends of the pipe cleaners around the base of each scrunchie. This will keep the rainbow in place and prevent it from slipping throughout the day.
- Add Rainbow Braids
For an extra pop of color, create rainbow plaits or braids at the back of the hair using colored thread. Take a small section of hair and secure it with a small elastic band. - Using a crochet hook, pull the colored thread behind the hair tie so it becomes part of the section. Treat the thread as one strand of hair, combining it with two other strands to create a three-strand braid.
- Secure the end of each rainbow braid with small elastic rubber bands and trim any excess thread for a neat finish.
- Repeat this with as many small sections as you like. We did four of these rainbow braids at the back.

If you’re not sure how to install the rainbow hair thread, or don’t have a crochet hook you can try the method shown below. I prefer using the crochet hook myself but this also works.

This Crazy Hair Day idea is perfect for kids because it’s playful, colorful, and stays in place all day. It’s comfortable enough for a full day of school and evening activities, and the added details like the fluffy clouds and rainbow braids make it stand out from the crowd, and kids will absolutely love this simple crazy hair day idea.
It’s one of the best crazy hair days for adding color without using hair dye or hair spray type products on your child. If your child has dark hair like mine, you will know that those don’t always show up so well on their hair and perhaps you prefer to avoid using excess dye products on your young child, so a diy like this is an easier solution where they can still have so much fun with crazy colorful hair for this special day.
