How to Use Our Free Printable Christmas Escape Room

You’re the official game host – the one guiding our brave rescuers as they outsmart Hugo and Jolly and save Christmas! Follow these simple steps to bring the adventure to life.

1. Print and prepare
   Print all puzzles, clue cards, the rescue code sheet, the certificate of completion, and the Golden Key image. (These make for an amazing photo op once the mission is completed!).
2. Hide the puzzles
   Important: the location of puzzle #2 is actually part of the answer to puzzle #1 – the players will need to solve it to discover where to go next (the answer is the kitchen).

Here are some fun location ideas for your puzzles…

• Under the Christmas tree
• Near the stockings
• On the couch
• By the bathroom mirror
• Inside a boot
• Near the front door

Tip: keep the puzzles in the correct order so players can move from one clue to the next smoothly.

3. Check the answers
   Use the included answer key to make sure each puzzle is solved correctly. Every puzzle gives one digit of the rescue code. Once all digits are collected, players write them on the rescue code sheet to unlock the Golden Key and save everyone trapped inside!
4. Set the scene
   The game takes about 45 minutes to complete.
   Play some Christmas music, start a timer, and cheer the players on as they race to solve each challenge before time runs out!
5. The big rescue
   When the rescue code is complete, hand the players the mission complete & breaking update pages – Santa, Mrs. Claus, the reindeer, and all the good elves have been freed! Finish the celebration by presenting the certificate of completion and snapping a photo with the Golden Key to commemorate their victory as official honorary elf detectives!

The Great Christmas Heist Escape Room Storyline

In this Christmas escape room game, two mischievous elves have locked Santa and his helpers away, stolen the Golden Key, and scattered coded clues around the workshop. Now it’s up to the rescuer team (your players)  to put the puzzles together, find every missing digit, crack the rescue code, unlock the correct clue locations, and save Santa before Christmas morning arrives. 

It’s cheeky, high-energy, and playful without drifting into anything over-magical or overly sentimental. The story creates just enough mystery to fuel the adventure, bring the team together, and make each puzzle feel like a stepping stone toward the final heist resolution.

The Great Christmas Heist Puzzle Breakdown

The first puzzle, Clever Code, challenges players to read a message packed with deliberate spelling errors, silly outbursts, and chaotic elf chatter. The goal is to hunt for the mistakes, count them, and convert the correct findings into the first rescue code digit combination. It’s detail-focused, funny, and a brilliant warm-up for getting the team into problem-solving mode.

The Stolen Journal is the second challenge and leans into cipher cracking. Players decode a cryptogram-style grid of scrambled letters to uncover a secret triumph message that hands over the next rescue code digit. This puzzle really shines for older kids, puzzle lovers, and adults who enjoy logic-driven challenges.

The third puzzle sees the team working through the North Pole Times newspaper challenge. The headline delivers breaking elf drama and hides intentional red herrings, jumbled numbers, and coded hints in the article copy. Once deciphered correctly, the puzzle yields the next set of rescue digits in the correct order using sequencing clues provided in the puzzle timeline.

Ornament Mix-Up adds a visual decoding layer. Letter-covered baubles are scrambled inside a scene full of clues. Players extract the correct ornament, decipher the mirror clue hint hidden in the message, and build the next block of code letters that convert into the following rescue digits.

The Stocking Stuffer puzzle uses visuals of familiar Christmas game items laid out in rows. Players determine the correct sequence of items, convert them into letters, chart the sequence against a simple code grid, and decode the correct value into the next rescue code digit.

And finally, Tricky Trivia brings in light Christmas-culture questions like counting song elements from popular holiday games, solving clues about Santa’s companions, and tallying items from a well-known Twelve Days adventure. Each correct answer corresponds with a number lock value, which then becomes the final code digit needed to beat the villains and open the vault.
