An engaging and straightforward activity where kids use potatoes to stamp poppy shapes, accentuated with real poppy seeds in the center and hand-drawn green stems, creating a beautiful artwork that's perfect for Remembrance Day.

Materials

  • Plain white paper
  • Red paint
  • Green paint
  • PVA Glue or a glue stick
  • One potato per child
  • Poppy seeds

Tools

  • Knife to cut potato (adult should do this step)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace:
Lay down some newspaper or a craft mat to protect your surfaces.
Get all your materials ready: potatoes, red paint, glue, poppy seeds, and green finger paint.
  2. Cut Your Potatoes:
Slice the potato in half. This will be your poppy 'stamp'. An adult should do this step
  3. Painting Time:
Dip the flat side of the potato into the red paint, ensuring it's evenly coated.
Stamp it onto your paper to create the poppy shape. Re-dip in paint as needed.
  4. Add the Poppy Seeds:
While the red paint is still wet, dab a bit of glue in the centre of each poppy.
Sprinkle poppy seeds over the glue. This not only gives it a realistic look but adds a lovely texture too!
  5. Shake It Off:
Once you're satisfied with the number of seeds, lift your paper and give it a gentle shake to remove any excess seeds.
  6. Green Finger Paint Fun:
Let your child dip their fingers in the green paint and draw the stems connecting the poppies. They can also add leaves if they feel extra artistic!
  7. Admire Your Creation:
Let your poppy artwork dry. Once done, display it proudly!
