Poppy Card for Veterans Day or Remembrance Day

A heartfelt paper poppy craft that’s perfect for Veterans Day or Remembrance Day. It's simple to make, bright, and meaningful!

Materials

  • Blue cardstock (card base)
  • Yellow cardstock (background)
  • Red paper (poppy petals + ribbon)
  • Green paper (stems and flower bases)
  • Black paper (thin strips for ribbon)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Marker or pen for your message

Instructions

  • Prepare the card baseUse a sheet of blue cardstock as your card. You can leave it flat like a poster or fold it in half to make a greeting card.
  • Add the yellow background. Cut a slightly smaller rectangle from yellow cardstock and glue it in the middle of the blue card. This bright background helps the poppies stand out.
  • Cut the poppy petals. From red paper, cut out three circles, all the same size.
  • Fold each circle exactly in half to make three semi-circles.
  • Snip the petals. Keeping each semi-circle folded, make several short cuts from the curved edge towards the straight edge, stopping before you reach the fold.
  • Open it out again so you have a fan shape with little petal sections. Gently fold some of the strips forward to give the poppies a 3D look.
  • Make stems and flower bases. From green paper, cut three long thin strips for stems. Then cut three small shapes that look like half-circles or little tulip heads – these will be the green bases of the poppies.
  • Glue the stems. Arrange the three green stems on the yellow background so they come up from the bottom and spread out. Glue them in place.
  • Attach the poppy petals. Glue one red semi-circle behind top of each green base so the curved, snipped edge is at the top. Press the straight edge down firmly and leave the petal slices slightly raised so the flowers look layered.
  • Create the remembrance ribbon. Cut a long red strip from paper. Then cut several thin black strips and glue them along the red strip to make stripes.
  • When it’s dry, glue this ribbon across the bottom of the stems at an angle.
  • Add your Veterans Day message. Use a marker to write a message such as “Thank You Veterans” or “We Remember and Honor You” on the front or inside of the card.
  • Let it dry. Leave the card flat until all the glue has dried, then it’s ready to give to a veteran, take to a school Veterans Day assembly, or display at home as a reminder to honor their service.
