Creating a prayer mat drawing is not only a fun and educational activity for children but also a wonderful way to engage with religious education and celebrate one’s identity, especially for Muslim kids during Ramadan.

How to Draw a Prayer Mat

Here’s a simple 8-step guide that you can follow to make a simple prayer mat picture, or use as a basis for a larger craft project.

This activity is great for all ages and can help kids learn about important religious symbols and items like the prayer mat aka Muslim prayer rug, or musallah

Step-by-Step Guide to Drawing a Prayer Mat

  1. Start with one vertical line
  2. Add a connecting horizontal line, to create a right angle
  3. Continue outwards to create the other side of the prayer mat
  4. Connect along the top, now you have a tall rectangle which will be your basic prayer mat shape.
  5. Now you’re going to add detail to the inside of the prayer mat. Copy the smaller rectangle shape inside, but be sure to leave the top of the rectangle open.
  6. Here, we’re going to add a small dome shape to the top of the smaller rectangle.
  7. Add tassels to the top of the prayer mat, by adding a series of short lines.
  8. Do the same to the bottom edge of the prayer mat.

This completes the basic prayer mat shape which you can decorate however you would like. We also have a set of free printable prayer mat templates which you can use for a similar activity, having the kids design and decorate their own prayer mats.
