Instructions

  1. Trace and Cut Out Handprints
Begin by choosing green construction paper for your mistletoe leaves. Help your child trace both of their hands onto the paper using a pencil. If they’re too young, you can lend a helping hand! Carefully cut out the handprints. These will form the base of your mistletoe.
  2. Assemble the Handprints
Lay the two handprints together so they slightly overlap, mimicking the natural layering of mistletoe leaves. Glue them together where they meet at the base. This creates the leafy effect that’s perfect for your mistletoe.
  3. Add the Festive Bow
Grab some red construction paper to cut out a cheerful bow. If you’re using the free ribbon template, print it out, cut the pieces, and trace it onto the paper.
  4. Assemble the bow by gluing the pieces together
  5. then attach your red ribbon to the top of the handprints where they join. This bright ribbon is the finishing touch that makes your mistletoe pop!
  6. Optional Details
If you’d like to add an extra layer of detail, you can cut out small white circles from construction paper to represent mistletoe berries and glue them onto the handprints. Let everything dry before proudly displaying your creation, and why not add the child's name at the bottom, along with the current year and the child's age

Mistletoe Handprint or Footprint Crafts

A classic Christmas keepsake craft is creating mistletoe using footprints, which makes for a precious and personal holiday decoration. However, we decided to mix things up by using handprints instead.

Not only does this variation add a unique twist to the tradition, but it also makes the craft more manageable for little ones who may find hand tracing a lot easier than getting their feet involved. This really is an easy Christmas craft for young children, and the result is super cute, and the finished product can be given as a christmas gift to relatives like grandparents during the holiday season.

Plus, the overlapping handprints create a beautiful, leafy effect that looks just like mistletoe leaves.

If you’re looking for a different way to create this craft or have a bit more time on your hands, you can also paint your child’s hands with green paint and make printed hand impressions on paper. If you choose this method, it’s best to use washable paint and have baby wipes on hand. You do not need to use too much paint, brush it on to get an even coverage and then place down firmly.

Once the paint dries, cut out the handprints and assemble them into mistletoe leaves just as you would with construction paper. While this version is definitely messier, it adds an artistic flair and can be a great sensory activity for kids who love working with paint this christmas season.
