How This Mom Made an Adorable DIY Derpy Costume from Kpop Demon Hunters

If your kids are obsessed with Kpop Demon Hunters, you’ve probably already heard of Derpy, the lovable, slightly chaotic creature who’s stolen hearts all over the world.

With Halloween around the corner, it’s no surprise that Kpop Demon Hunters costumes are going to be one of the biggest trends of the year, and if you want to go beyond dressing as Rumi, Mira or Zoey (the three Huntrx girls) then Derpy is a fantastic option.

But since you can’t buy a Derpy costume anywhere right now, creative parents are taking things into their own hands, and one mom, Kelsey Marie Newcombe, absolutely nailed it with her homemade version.

Kelsey shared her kpop demon hunters tiger costume project in the Kpop Demon Hunters group, writing:

“Finished my daughter’s Derpy costume! Made from a dino costume, hot glue and felt! The bird was from Dollarama which I transformed into the Sussie bird 😁

Decides to add a video of my girl wearing it! Please be kind! I don’t mess around when it comes to my babies! 😊”

The result is pure magic. She transformed a blue dinosaur onesie into the cutest, coziest Derpy costume DIY you’ll ever see.

From the oversized yellow eyes to the blue striped tail and the handmade Sussie bird perched on top, every detail in this Derpy tiger cosplay is spot-on. Not only does it capture Derpy’s quirky charm, but it’s also practical and comfortable, which is a big win for little ones on Halloween night.

Fans in the Kpop Demon Hunters community were quick to gush over her creativity. One mom commented, “This is literally perfect. GREAT job!” while another added, “Very talented!” and “This looks so good!”

One mom wrote, “At first glance it’s like yeah, good costume, but when you go in and see the work involved and the details you’ve done, it’s truly incredible. Well done. That’s a talent!” And another mom summed it up perfectly: “This turned great! She’s going to be so cute.”

Kelsey replied humbly, saying, “Thank you so much! I worked pretty hard on it and my girl loves it!!!”

We can totally see why. The homemade touches make this costume extra special. The Sussie bird, perched on top of Derpy’s head, is a perfect nod to one of Derpy’s most iconic details. Sussie might look silly, but fans know he’s a loyal sidekick who adds to Derpy’s endearing personality.

Derpy himself is known for his goofy grin, bright eyes, and lovable antics, the kind of character kids instantly connect with.

Making your own Kpop Demon Hunters Derpy costume at home means your child gets to embody all that fun energy while staying comfy enough to run around trick-or-treating.

If you’re inspired by Kelsey’s project and wondering how to make a Derpy costume, you’ll need a blue onesie (a dinosaur or dragon design works great), felt in shades of blue and black for the facial features and stripes, yellow and orangey red for the eyes and hot glue to assemble everything.

Here’s the before and after transformation from Dino onesie into K-Pop Demon Hunters Derpy the tiger. From the front…

As you can see some of the dinosaur teeth are kept and transformed into Derpy’s teeth – so smart.

And the back…

The dinosaurs spines are removed and the back is decorated with more of Derpy’s instantly recognisable stripes.

What we love so much about this Kpop Derpy tiger costume is how comfortable and practical it is. Very young kids are not going to tolerate wearing an elaborate Derpy tiger mask but they will be so happy and comfy in a DIY Derpy tiger costume like this, that’s just as comfortable as wearing your PJs!

It’s also a great option for trick or treating or trunk or treat events in the colder weather, as your little tiger Derpy will be comfy and cozy inside this diy demon hunter costume.

If you have a larger family group all wanting to dress up in a Kpop demon hunters theme, then this idea is perfect for the youngest kid while siblings or cousins can dress up in a Rumi or Zoey kpop demon hunters costume, and so on… or even dress as the Saja Boys.

For the top of the costume, you can repurpose a small bird decoration or toy to create Sussie, just add a few details with paint or felt to match the look from the hit Netflix movie.

This is the bird that Kelsey used…
