Mario Sports Super Stars is a new sports themed game for Nintendo 3DS systems, featuring five different types of sports for players to try out, while playing as different Mario characters.

The game offers 18 characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, including favourites such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy. Each character has their own set of statistics, so you can choose whether you want a good all rounder or someone who has certain strengths. My kids enjoy experimenting with which character is better, and you can unlock extra items for them as you progress through the game.

The five sports included in Mario Sports Super Stars are:

  1. Football
  2. Baseball
  3. Tennis
  4. Golf
  5. Horse Racing

It’s the first time that football and baseball games have been available on the 3DS hand held consoles, and the football especially was very welcome with my kids are they are really into that at the moment. There is a football element within Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics on the Nintendo Wii U, but with this Mario Super Sports Stars the football can be played on the go. It is full 11-a-side football, allowing you to set formations, change the stadium, or even the time of day.

Each of the sports included are quite in depth, so you can play full matchs either as single player, local multi player with friends, or online multi player globally! Each sport contains tutorials, training, and tournament modes to help players to build up their skills.

With some of the sports, if you’ve already played dedicated games like Mario Tennis then you will recognise the format and there are some similarities, as the Tennis and Golf have been developed by the same team who created those.

The game is a PEGI 3. We’ve put this one on R’s DS (age 5) and he has been enjoying the game, and found it easy to navigate and was able to manage each sport. He does have previous experience with other sporty Mario games like Mario Tennis and Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics, but I think kids of a similar age will pick it up quickly regardless of experience.

For gamers of any age who are fans of the Mario characters and enjoy sports, this is a fun game and a good all rounder with five solid sport options included. I asked R what he wanted to share about Mario Sports Super Stars in the review and he said “The most important thing is that it is REALLY FUN”

A brand new series of Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards has also been released alongside the game. There are 90 cards to collect, 18 characters, in each of the 5 sports, and those who purchase the first production run version of the game will also receive a randomly selected Mario Sports Superstars amiibo card!

The amiibo cards also unlock the ‘Road to Superstars’ mini game. This game looks like a bricks breaking style game. Using Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards, players will break down walls and defeat enemies using items related to the amiibo card in use (tennis balls, golf balls etc). At the end of the level, you will come up against a boss. Defeating the level boss results in the character and the sport displayed on your amiibo cards receiving the Superstar status. Character with this Superstar status have increased statistics, even beyond the Star characters. Once completed, you’ll be able to select this character in the other modes of the related sport.

  1. Oh wow, I had no clue Nintendo release this game on the 3DS. I’ve been searching for games to play on my 3DS. I recently became a dad, and handheld gaming is the only video game I can at the moment.

Very easy to hit pause and take care of my little boy! I’ve always been a fan of old Mario sports game, Mario Tennis was my favorite, and this one has it!

Thank you for the great article, I might go buy this game soon.
