The iconic blue blur, Sonic the Hedgehog, is back with a new game on Nintendo 3DS family systems – Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Sonic is a character that my kids love, and their dad and I remember fondly from our own childhood so we’re always happy to see a new Sonic game released. Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice did not disappoint!

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a traditional Sonic platform game, but with twists on many of the traditional elements, like over the top speed runs, and you also get access to new areas.

The storyline of the game centres around Sonic and his friends battling Dr Eggman and the new villain D-Fekt, as they explore, race and embark on their mission to save the world!

While playing the game, you can switch instantly between the five characters to make use of their individual skills – such as Sonic’s speed, Tail’s hovering ability, Knuckles’ strength, Sticks’ boomerang and Amy’s hammer. Each of these characters are unlocked as you progress through the game, apart from Sonic who is available at the start of the game.

Each character can change between ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ elements when they need to, which allows them to tackle features and obstacles such as ice blocks or water, to complete the level.

If your children watch the animated series, Sonic Boom, then the new Fire & Ice game ties in well with this, featuring cut scenes and the type of humour that you’ll find within the series.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a very family friendly game, rated Pegi 3, so it’s suitable for all my children and they all managed it quite well (ages 5, 6 and 8). They were able to manage the controls easily, and the game does prompt you with what you may need to press in certain points, as you start out the game.

My eldest completed the first level in about 5 minutes, and then continued on to complete more levels and unlock some more of the characters. You can also unlock 6 new character themed bots and race friends in the all new multiplayer bot racing feature.
