Goodbye Christopher Robin is the true story of the family behind the famous and well-loved Winnie-the-Pooh. It’s brilliantly made and really captivating.
It’s not often we come across a historical true story movie like this that appeals to the whole family, but it was a hit with my children aged 6-9 as well as with us parents. It took the kids about 10 or 15 minutes to get into, so at the beginning I wasn’t sure if it was going to keep their interest but by the end of the movie they were gripped! I found it a refreshing change to the usual animated movies that we watch with the kids.
At the end of the First World War, beloved children’s author A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) creates the magical world of Winnie-the-Pooh—which brings him immediate acclaim. But the books’ international success comes at a cost to the author, his young son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston) and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie), in this beautifully filmed, poignant story about fame and family that also stars Kelly Macdonald.
Follow the journey A. A. Milne and his family embark on when the birth of Winnie-the-Pooh grasps the attention of not just Britain, but the entire world, as everyone falls for the warm, soft, fuzzy bear who conquers our hearts just as much today as he did back then.
I found the story of A.A Milne and his family really fascinating, as I admit I hadn’t really thought more deeply into Winnie the Pooh’s origins and what effect the fame of this story would have had on the family, particularly Christopher Robin (or Billy Moon as he was actually known to his family – as you’ll see in the film!)
At times their story is desperately sad, but there are moments that warm your heart. It’s a story that lingers in your mind after watching, not quickly forgotten, which is the mark of a great movie.
It’s the tale of the most famous bear Winnie, but it’s also the tale of a father and son, of a man dealing with the aftermath of war, and of a child growing up in the public eye. There are many layers to the story, with issues that are just as relatable now as when the Winnie-the-Pooh story was first brought to life.
Of course, Winnie-the-Pooh originally looked quite different to the red t-shirted bear we often think of today. It’s really interesting to see the characters as they originally would have been (like this Merrythought Teddy bear, which was the original Winnie-the-Pooh)
I loved the shots of the 100 Acre Wood and seeing how the illustrations were captured, with sketches as Christopher Robin and A.A Milne played. This was so beautifully shot in the movie, and has made me want to go and visit the real 100 Acre wood!
I would definitely recommend this movie as a must-watch for all ages.
