World Book Day is approaching once again, and all of my primary school children will be dressing up in their schools. But what about the toddler? I’m sure she will want to get involved too, and I’m not one to turn down a cute photo opportunity! So I will definitely be dressing up our toddler along with her older brothers on world book day.
There are so many great classic baby and toddler books that could be used for costume inspiration. You could try..
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- The Gruffalo or The Gruffalo’s Child
- Elmer
- Rainbow Fish
- Spot the Dog
- Winnie the Pooh (or Tigger, Eeyore… and so on)
- The Highway Rat
If you want to use a costume you already have and link it in to a book, then there are plenty of animals in Dear Zoo who could work for costumes, or check out the That’s Not My… range from Usbourne, which would give your baby an excuse to dress up as some fun ideas like a Unicorn (we did a unicorn costume for N at Halloween, which got a lot of compliments!), mermaid, dinosaur and loads of others. These are a fab range of books, and have always been a big hit with my kids at this age.
In fact, Baby N tends to favour picture books at this age too. She loves books with just one word on each page, especially when it has lots of her favourite animals and things that she recognises, and she also loves the type which have photos and realistic images on each page. She will spend ages looking through the pictures carefully, pointing at pictures for me or her brothers to tell her the words.
If your toddler is into picture books, or animal books, then this can give you a huge range of costume ideas to draw from!
We were sent a really cute Peacock costume from Vegaoo which I chose because it’s such a different and unique costume idea, and I love peacocks – they’re such beautiful and majestic birds.
When I was about 7 I read a book called ‘The Peacock Garden’ by Anita Desai which I really enjoyed, and I’ve always been keen on peacocks since then! Although N is too young for that book right now, I will definitely pick up a copy for her once she is a few years older.
The Vegaoo Peacock costume is made up of several parts, to make it easy for babies or toddlers to wear. It has an all in one for the main base of the costume, and then the peacock wings snap on to the back separately, with a separate headpiece and shoes too.
It’s cleverly done how the peacock’s plume / wings snap on at the back, and the costume is quite comfy for N. We got the 12-18 and she is 13 months old, it is a little big but with another month to go until World Book Day I’m sure she will grow a bit more!
I can’t wait to see all four of the kids dressed up together on World Book Day!
