A favourite from my own childhood and now a firm favourite with my own kids, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle will never go out of fashion. Beautifully illustrated and simply written, it is the perfect story to wind down to at bedtime or use in a daytime activity explaining the lifecycle of a butterfly.
To extend the fun of a favourite book, I like to incorporate them into some of our after school arts and crafts activities at home. I bought a box of colourful cupcake cases recently which were perfect for the activity I had in mind to go along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Supplies
- Coloured cupcake cases / liners
- Popsicle sticks
- Sticky gems
- Googly eye
- Glue
How to make The Cupcake Liner Caterpillar Craft
I sat down with my youngest to this activity, whilst her big brothers were busy with their homework. This can be the trickiest part of our day, so I like to give my daughter a simple activity to do that will give her brothers a bit of peace and quiet (this doesn’t always go to plan!)
We often refer to it as “her homework” as she really does not like to miss out on anything and it will help get her into the routine of doing homework after school when she starts.
We started work on the caterpillar first, squashing down green cupcake cases for his head and gluing these across a large sheet of white paper.
Next up was his red head, which we finished off with a big googly eye and a little smile. Add on a few sparkly gems and your done.
At the end of the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar emerges from his cocoon as a beautiful butterfly and our colorful cupcake cases were perfect to recreate him as a colorful butterfly.
My daughter choose 4 different colored cupcake cases to use to make her butterflies body, which she squashed down before gluing them onto another large sheet of white paper.
We then used a popsicle stick for his body, which my daughter added a little face on with a marker pen before sticking a few more of our sparkly gems over the butterflies wings.

Thank you so much for sharing these ideas. We made the muffin cup caterpillars with the preschoolers this past week. They loved them. They turned out to be unique to them. I always look for crafts that use many different materials that are affordable, and that can be changed a bit to make them unique to each student. This craft did just that. All the kids were so excited to show theirs to their parents when they came. Our caterpillars are now hanging up in our classroom to help us welcome spring! Thanks again for the great idea!
