Children learn best through play, and some of the happiest childhood memories are made when playing and exploring with friends, especially during the long summer holidays. My sister and I, and the neighbourhood kids, always enjoyed riding our bikes around together, playing football or climbing trees in the garden or local park.

Throughout these times, a few bumps and scrapes along the way are inevitable, and once you pick yourself up and dust yourself off, sometimes you’ll have your own scar story to remember the incident by!

Today I’m sharing one of my scar stories, and giving you the chance to win an exciting prize package by sharing one of your own!

Somehow, I managed to get through childhood without any broken bones at all but I do have a couple of scar stories from our playful adventures. Each summer, we used to spend a few days in a local jazz festival in our town, which was held in an athletic stadium. The parents would listen to the performances, meanwhile we kids would be free to roam around and play together. One day, when I would have been about 9, we were playing on top of a hill that was in the grounds of the stadium and we decided to race each other by rolling down the hill. We were rolling really fast and unfortunately I landed on broken glass at the bottom, which sliced my stomach! Luckily it wasn’t too serious as the cuts weren’t too deep but that was one of my most memorable injuries.

While it’s important to promote safe play, it’s impossible to wrap your children up in cotton wool. Sometimes, these things happen so it’s worth having a fully stocked up medicine cabinet or first aid box, with plenty of antiseptic cream and plasters.

Germolene 30g antiseptic cream

Germolene Antiseptic Cream is used to ease pain and help prevent infections of minor cuts and grazes, minor burns, scalds, blisters, stings and insect bites, spots and chapped or rough skin.

The cream contains two active substances, phenol and chlorhexidine digluconate. Phenol and chlorhexidine digluconate have antiseptic properties for the disinfection of skin, wounds and burns. Phenol also has a local anaesthetic action for the relief of pain. The cream base helps to soften the skin and soothe irritation.

Germolene Antiseptic Cream is a competitively priced first aid choice for all the family and costs £1.79 (RRP) for a 30g tube and £2.99 (RRP) for a 55g tube. Germolene Antiseptic Cream is widely available from Boots, Superdrug, pharmacies nationwide and other major retailers, including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose and Sainsburys.

  1. Oh dear that rolling down the hill episode was done exactly the same by my Son, only it involved some stitches. I did warn him about glass and poo but alas he didn’t listen.
As for grazed knees it always seemed to happen when new trousers were bought?/

  2. My ‘scar story’s is by virtue of my own exploits when I was five years old. Playing hide and seek in the house and running excitedly through the hall, falling over my own foot, and straight through the front door glass panel landing in the porch outside. The glass missed my eyes by a tiny fraction and I needed stitches across my forehead. Mum used to swear by Germaline in those days and its a smell I remember from a young age. My own medicine cupboard is always well stocked for my own children ! Luckily they have ,thus far, escaped any major scarring stories but my Germaline is always there for any scrapes and scratches!

  4. My scar story involves my own exploits at about five years old. I was playing hide and seek at home when, running excitedly through the hall, I tripped over my own foot and fell through the front door glass panel. Lucky the glass missed my eyes and stitches were put in across my forehead . My Mum always had Germaline at home in those days and its a smell I remember fondly from my childhood! Luckily my own children have thus far escaped any scarring stories! Although I always have a stock of Germaline in my own medicine cupboard and they will remember this as I fondly as I when they are older!

  5. My son who has one eye is always falling over and then getting up and brushing his knees and carrying on.
On one windy day he lent against the door frame and he didn’t know it was where the hinges are. the door blew shut trapping his finger. I rang the hospital because he had chicken pox and was advised to bring him in and when we got there to tell them so they could put him in isolation from other children. He now has a scar where the fracture was.

  6. When I was about 4 or 5 years old I was at Daycare running around as usual. I obviously wasn’t paying attention because I ran smack into the handle of a broomstick that someone else was swinging in my direction. I put my hands over the left-side of my forehead and starting screaming and screaming. When I pulled my hands away, blood squirted out and apparently my skull could be seen. Needless to say I had to have quite a few stitches but was not allowed to be put to sleep for them as I could have died or woke up with brain damage. Now that I am 32 I still have a large scar that sticks out on my forehead – the scar tissue gets irritated every now and again and scabs up. I don’t think it will ever go away.

  7. When I was about 5 years old I was playing in the back garden, I used to pretend I was in a garden show and I would talk to my audience and tell the camera crew to ‘cut’ etc. The garden itself was very steep with a rockgarden next to the path, on one of my ‘takes’ I ran up the steps to show my enthusiasm to the ‘camera’ (just like I’d seen on blue peter or something tv show like that probably!!), I jumped up the steps with a little too much bounce and managed to miss the step, fall forward and catch my nose on the side of a sharp rock, I had managed to dis-attach my left nostril !! I now have a scar to show for my fake stardom and I never did get that presenting job either !

  8. When I was 10, I got my thumb stuck in the top of a glass milk bottle…rather than going to find mum/dad and get it out, I decided to smash the bottle off the pavement to release my thumb instead. This was swiftly followed by a trip to A&E and 12 stitches!

    I don’t drink milk anymore.

    LOL

  9. I have a scar at the side of my eye – hardly visible now I’m in my late 40s – which came from an injury I had from a branch jutting out over the river which caught my face as we floated down the river on a punting trip when I was a very young child. Two familes, two boats, I was with my friend’s parents and my friend’s dad was punting and failed to warn me to duck. My parents were livid!

  10. When I was a toddler, my mum had mopped the kitchen floor, I thought it would be a good idea to slide on the floor hence smashing my forehead open on a sharp corner, so that was a trip to the A&E for stitches, I always remember someone dressed as Mr Bump came round to all the children in the hospital

  11. When I was younger I loved playing out on my roller blades with my best friend. We would spend hours going up and down our avenue on them, often with a few accidents. However, on this particular day I was roller blading down our avenue on the pavement rather than the tarmac road; the pavement was made of slabs of stone. There was a particularly uneven section where one slab was sticking up from the rest and I went flying when I tripped over this slab. I landed on my hands and knees which were badly graded and bleeding. My mum could hear my crying from across the road and rushed out to see what had happened and if I was okay. She patched me up and stuck a plaster on my knee up. All was fine really until one day at school my plaster came off and my knee began to bleed again so I went to the dinner lady, Mrs Day, and she took me inside to the first aid box. She couldn’t find a big enough plaster so she improvised and taped a piece of cotton guise to me knee. Little did I know that this would become stuck to my knee for WEEKS! The only way to get this off my knee was to soak it in the shower and trim it down after each one until eventually it feel off with my scab. I was called scabby knees for ages! I now have a lovely big scar on my knee from this roller blading accident and will never forget Mrs Day!

  13. It didn’t happen ‘intheplayroom’ but was ‘in the play ground’ – I was often the subject of bullying and was certainly a bit of a ‘tom boy’ for which the girls taunted me for. Anyway, one damp and grey play time I was sitting on the big hexagonal climbing frame and could see a group of girls coming my way so I climbed higher and higher until I was at the top. ( I have always liked climbing and heights ha ha) The bell rang for end of play just as I reached as high as I could go and as all the children ran to go in I slipped and fell. I landed badly on my knee and was taken to hospital. I had to have an operation that resulted in a large scar on my right knee. Anyway, that was sadly not the end of the scar story as following my operation I was in a hospital bed with weights hanging off my leg over the end of the bed. One day, (nearing the end of my treatment) the ward was really busy and I called for the nurse to ask if I could go to toilet. She said I could (meaning she would fetch me a bedpan) However, I assumed she meant I might GO to the Toilet. I wiggled down to the end of the bed and lowered myself on to the floor. I was by then busting so mind on getting to the toilet I did not unclip the weights and tried to walk…….This stupidity set me back another week in the hospital bed!

  16. I remember my ‘Scar Story’ like it way only yesterday. It happened in junior school with my best friend called Clare. We would have our own wooden desks (back in the day) and I would alway hide a packet of sweets or biscuits in my desk to snack on, without the teacher seeing. Well one day I took some milky way star chocolates, which make me turn a little hyper (goodness knows why, they still do till this day :). My friend and I sneaked back inside from outdoor play and went into the class room. We were dancing around pretending to be magical fairies. Unfortunately I fell over and held out of my friend to help, which of course brought her falling to the ground as well. I knocked over all the glass jars and hurt my leg against the wooden storage cupboard. My class teacher was not impressed, however it didn’t stop me taking sweets into my class!! 🙂

  17. i remember running home with my friend so excited as i wanted to ask my mum (think i was about 10) if i could go to the school disco the next day. Knocking on the back door & i pushed to open it as it always stuck & put my arm right through the big glass pane 🙁 Trip to a & e! They tried putting several butterfly sutures in but these didn’t hold it s back for 8 normal sutures. In the end it has left a big scar, they offered plastic surgery because they messed up but i didn’t want to go through that at 10. still went to my school disco though with a massive bandage haha –

Unfortunately one piece of spinning wood evaded my hands and sliced into my eyebrow resulting in gushing blood. Our anxious Mum was told that I had slipped and cut my head on a fire fender, a story which she believed well into her eighties until he sons confessed! I see the scar everyday and it makes me smile even all these years later!

  20. In the good old days when, as children, we would walk around the village on our own, I was coming back from my friends house in the dark. I was a little bit scared so I started running. But just as I was running down our drive, my shoe flew off then I tripped over it and went flying. I skidded across the driveway on the side of my hand and still have the scars to prove it. Ouch!!

The other scar I still have is from a time I was out riding my bike round the alleyways near our house. I went round the corner at full speed, just as another child was doing the same thing in the opposite direction. We drove straight into each other and my finder got squashed between our handlebars. You could see my bone and I soon learnt to slow down and watch where I was going!

This day they turned up with a bike for me, it was a little battered but as I was learning it was perfect for me and I was straight off to the park to learn to ride…….
It was a beautiful breezy spring day and I can remember being able to stay up for longer and longer without falling and feeling pretty pleased with myself UNTIL I steered in the wrong direction and fell down a ditch,,,,,before I could cry there was blood everywhere and I could see a cut as big as a 10 pence pieces on my leg. Running home with bike in towe I cried for mum and she cleaned it up and made me feel better as only
Mums can. I still have a little scar now but I love it because every scar tells a story and I love this memory x

Anyway, I started running down but as I was going so fast I couldn’t stop. At the speed I was going just before the bottom I did fall over and badly scraped my knees. I do have slight scar on my right knee as took quite a few months to heal. As the old saying goes – I didn’t do that again!

Well one day after a few bottles of diamond white I fell backwards down a man hole that one of my ‘friends’ had decided to lift the cover off. I swear that I was under ground by about a foot or so and somehow…due to embarrassment..I managed to find the strength to lift myself up and out. I casually said I was going home and could feel a warm feeling on my leg. When I lifted my jeans I had blood pouring out and loads of flesh kinda missing. I couldnt tell my mum or she would have killed me so left it…anyhoo as Im a picker it never healed properly and has gone all shiny and horrid looking years later.

My mum said it wouldn’t stop bleeding and the doctors wouldn’t let them in the room whilst they stitched me up. I quite like my quirky scar though!

So in the excitement to go and sit towards the back of the screen room to watch a film I decided to fall up the steps, you know the type with a metal strip, poorly lit. My reaction well, I got up and continue to go up and find a seat. As the adverts began to roll my friends began to pester me to check my leg, and was I okay. In the dim lit room I checked my leg and saw blood cue going out the room to clear it up, only I couldn’t clean it up we had to report it and get first aid. First aid decided to call an ambulance and I ended up in a and e requiring stitches! After the stitches were done I then decided to go back on the same day to the cinema to watch the next screening of the film!

She looked so sweet that I crept off and took a sneaky pic of her. I then sat down with my older daughter to read a book, telling her to keep quiet so as not to wake her little sister. Unfortunately the peace was suddenly broken by bloody curdling cries…my little one had slipped off her perch, landed on our (very hard) wooden floor and had blood pouring down her little face. She’s now eleven and (an A&E trip later) still has the silver scar cutting across her eyebrow…odd how we don’t look at that photo much!

We used cable ties to attach it to two trees in the middle of our den that was hidden under branches and leaves we’d gathered.
I decided to test the DIY hammock and fell off it as quickly as I had got one it, a sharp piece of the broken wire at the side scored all down the inside of my calf from knee to ankle in a diagonal line. That was 14 years ago and I still have the scar clear as day. Such a large , impressive looking scar for a not very impressive childhood idea! Haha.

I was a smoker in my younger days and ended up having surgery because my lungs kept collapsing, the round scars are from all the tubes i had to have inserted between the ribs, they went into my chest cavity to suck out the air and re-inflate the lung. The rest are from the surgery i had to glue my lungs to the chest wall. Its been about 10 years since i had my first op and i feel pretty good these days. So yeah – i dont recommend smoking.

I was 7 and round my friends Rachel’s (she lived the other side of the village about two miles from my house, when that’s how far we were allowed to play), at a time when there was still a lot of houses being built and thus a lot of rubble. We were just chasing about around the path when I stumbled and when sprawling into a pile of flints. The flints ripped into my hands leaving their marks in rivers of red. My friend’s mum simply patched me up and sent me home!

Weeks later when I had healed, a local Policewoman came to ‘take our finger prints’, thanks to those flints I have exceptional and sinister looking prints now!

They both fell whilst at nursery, both 18 months at the time, one into a bookcase and one into a door. My daughter (now 9) had her head glued and although I know where it is, you cannot see this scar now. My son (now 7) had butterfly sticker stitches applied, despite me telling them the story of my daughter and that he hates stickers! As expected, he pulled them off straight away but they refused to glue his head, he now has what he calls his Harry Potter scar and I think it is so unfair.

All of a sudden, I flipped over the my handlebars and wiped out on the ground. My right knee was bleeding, and my trousers were torn up. I found a stick lodged in my front wheel, and my handlebars turned backward (I guess from holding on when the bike stopped). I yelled for my brother, who pedaled away. I managed to get the stick out, and another child in the area helped turn my handlebars. But I was in too much pain to ride home. So I had to walk my bike. Half a mile. Limping and crying the entire way. Hoping my mom would come and meet me. Turns out my brother didn’t even bother to tell her I wrecked my bike (or really downplayed it). My knee looked so bad that my mom debated taking me to the emergency room (which, as an American, is rather expensive). She cleaned the wound with peroxide and bandaged my entire knee. A couple weeks later, I wiped out at the bottom of a hill and reopened the scab (on my way to the same playground). Not a good summer, and I still have a huge scar on my right kneecap.

  58. My scar story happened a long time ago, I was playing `off ground tick` with a group of kids in the tenaments were we lived. I was on top of the air raid shelter and was walking backwards neadless to say I fell off. and got a large cut on the back off my head. My dad was quite strick and my brothers and sisters should have been looking after me, so they took me home and made me promise not to tell anyone. I didn`t but still have the scare.

My Mum was almost physically sick when cleaning me up….and I was too late for the ice cream van. Fortunately, the scar healed well thanks to Germolene!

A family friend was pushing me and my younger brother down a hill in a wind surfing buggy, but on one run he managed to flip the buggy over backwards which tipped us out and caused me to skid down the hill on my back causing massive friction burns- it was so painful and I was sticking to the bed sheets for weeks! But I think the family friend felt much more guilt than I felt pain!

Unfortunately, whilst she was out, the cross legged stool I was sat on collapsed and, as it went down, I put my right hand underneath me to catch my fall. My fingers got trapped in the stool mechanism, I screamed, my friend ran home and I ran to my aunt’s who lived nearby leaving blood splatters on the walls as I ran out of the house. My mum must have had an almighty fright when she returned home from posting her letter to find neither me nor my friend there and blood all over the walls. I still have a damaged finger nail on my right hand to remember that eventful day but thankfully no other long lasting injuries.

  64. My “scar story” was caused by my loving big sister (3 years older). We were staying at my aunties house. She owned a big fat ginger cat called tails, because it had a paralysed tail. I picked him up and placed him on my sisters lap. He decided he didn’t want to be there and dug his claws into her new jeans. She handled it well and decided to chuck him at me! Luckily at striking point I had my eyes closed as he scratched from above my eyebrow to the bottom of my cheek leaving me with a 5 inch scar down my face. Luckily over time it has faded and can barely been seen now and i still use this against my sister now 🙂

Some had gone in so deep they left a few scars on my palm. I had to go to A&E who had to spend hours pulling them out individually with tweezers.Let’s just say whenever I see a cactus it always reminds me of that pain.

  67. I got nasty chicken pox when I was five and we were staying at my mums friends house in the North of Scotland. After drying me too hard with a towel after the bath, the top came off the biggest one, which happened to be right in the middle of my neck. A keloid scar formed over it as I got older. What once started as a few mm is now a few cm wide across my neck. I had steroid injections at age 8 into the site of the scar but as I bit the doctor, we didn’t attempt that procedure again. I have just learned to live with it now that I’m in my 30s. I think it’s hilarious when people think it’s a “love bite”.

He was about two and a half and sitting in his highchair feeding himself (not strapped in) and eating for the first time from a real bowl rather than his normal plastic. I was drying my hair and literally turned my back for a second but that was all he needed to scramble out the highchair and climb out, pulling it over and somehow managing to smash the bowl in the process. He cut his lip on the bowl and blood was gushing from it, I have never panicked so much in my life I couldn’t get the bleeding to stop! An ambulance trip and some stitches and a few hours later all was well. I still feel sick when I think about it though. Don’t think he got “a real” bowl again until he was about five!

  70. My only scar was formed as my family had gone to collect my older brother from his first residential school trip so it was just me and my dad home. I was doing handstands onto the chair next to my dad’s prize possession – his music station, bought with a loan before I was born and still being paid back. It was in a glass cabinet with metal edging. When my shin landed on the metal corner, blood everywhere, he was going mad checking for damage on the stereo!

She rubbed some on the graze but I was still in a lot of pain. An hour later my dad returned from work, he took one look at my arm and said “well thats broken!” 6 hours later I emerge from A&E with a double break and a plaster cast up to my shoulder. We still laugh about it now that my mum though Germolene cold fix my broken arm!

  72. I have three scars. Two are major scars from pacemaker operations and these are my favourite scars as it reminds me I’m alive and still have lots of life left to live. My third scar happened when I was 12. My mom used to manage a pub and my and my brother were playing in the ballroom during the lunchtime shift and the ballroom was empty. We were only allowed to drink squash, but being the cheeky devils that we were we wanted some fizzy coke. So I decided to jump onto the bar, lean back and pour some cokes into glasses so we were sophisticated like the grown ups in the bar. Anyway we hear someone coming so I jumped off the bar, accidentally knocking the glasses on the floor. In my naivety I scooped up the glass to avoid getting told off. Ended up in A&E with glass sticking out my little finger. Had to have a few stitches. I never did that again!!

It would NOT stop bleeding and turned my housemates quite green. I also have a caesarean scar that was quite neat until it was reopened for subsequent abdominal surgery. It’s not quite as neat as it was but the surgeon did a very good job of minimising the carring overall.

Id made her it and stupidly let her sit on the settee because she was watching Buffy. She jumped at one bit and threw the pot noodle down herself. It very badly burnt her leg. I was embarrassed so told her to say at the hospital she burnt it on tea. When the doctor asked her what happened she said ‘mummy told me to say I burnt it on a cup of tea’ that took some explaining.

  86. The worst/best scar I have is from where some kids tied me by my neck to a tree. I was at my Auntys house, I was about 6, and we were playing in the small field nearby, when they said that to join their club, they had to tie me up. When they started to tie me by my neck I began screaming, but then they tied it so hard that I couldn’t make any noise. I kept trying to move my head as they ran off, but all I was doing was rubbing the skin off of my throat. It was lucky my mum came to look for me, as I was really starting to panic. I don’t remember much from afterwards, but still have a rough red raised scar from where I took off so much skin.

Unfortunately I misjudged the strength of the last branch which broke & I slid down the trunk snapping several branches on my way down to a more secure branch. I won but smelt of Germalene for several days!

Unfortunately, on the first hole, I didn’t get a hole in one. What I did do was fall over the ledge of the course and cut my knee cap quite badly. There was blood – a lot of it. 16 years on the scar of that accident still remains, and the mental scars of crazy golf still remain.

She gave us all a Space-hopper with such foundness.
Mam was, not so thrilled, with what happened with this blast from the past, though.
I wanted to ‘really’ bounce high on mine – higher than all the other kids!
I climbed onto the garden wall. to give myself the momentum of height.
I awkwardly positioned the hopper under my bum.
On the count of three – and, with all the other kids watching on in awe ….
I leapt off the wall – but, gravity dragged me backwards – where I rammed my head onto the wall.
I still have the small scar on my knee and chin.
But, it was the embarrassement that really hurt.
And, Mam’s words ringing in my ears – ‘Why do you always have too turn the simplist of activities into major events??’

When I was 9 or 10 I was playing in my mother’s friend’s back yard and they had some big tea chests which were great fun to jump on and off until I slipped and the sharp metal edge strips caught me as I fell, meaning the back of both legs got ripped on it from top to bottom as I slipped past the sharp edge. Cue blood everywhere. My mother eventually managed to stop the bleeding and pulled out the Germolene that she carried everywhere with her for such emergencies. It was the pink germolene with a strong smell that my mum and grandma swore by for every single skin ailment! You would never catch them without it! Unfortunately because I did it on holiday and later went in the sea when it was a bit more healed up and not stinging, I got a lovely scar left behind, right down the back of both legs!

She was ironing i was on the sofa watching tv she turned popped literally around the door frame to get some more water for the steam iron and i saw my chance….I was there in a flash, ironing for my mum, although i didnt iron any clothing….i ironed my wrist!!! i remember my skin melting and screaming my mum was there in a flash, i remember eating a banana to cheer me up, whilst my mum wiped my flesh off the iron….how times have changed, today a child would have probably been given money, sweets, more time on the xbox followed by an overnight stay in hospital…those days we just dealt with it and moved on!!!

  100. My scar story involves ice, steps and a very sore head! One cold December afternoon I was busy tidying up and went to put rubbish in the bin when wheek! my foot slid on the step and I ended up cracking my head on the steps. Ouch! Indian rain dance quickly followed in the garden, hoping nobody had noticed my less than graceful fall, then I looked at my hand…blood! I hate blood! My 2 year old son was in the living room completely oblivious to the drama, I made an anxious phone call to my parents and then to nhs 24 who advised me to head to Wishaw General. Thankfully my cousin came to my rescue and took me to hospital. 6 staples later in the back of my head and I was heading home for a very long night of drifting to sleep and my dad periodically waking me up again to check I was okay, and drifting and checking and drifting and checking…If that wasn’t bad enough a few days later I fell down the stairs in the house and tore the ligaments in my ankle….my doctor offered to wrap me up in cotton wool!
