£100 John Lewis Voucher Giveaway – Top Tips for Decluttering in 2016.

By In The Playroom

Every new year, we’re always keen to make a fresh start and for me a big part of that is to declutter the house, make more space and give everything a thorough deep clean too. Last year on New Year’s Day itself we gathered together a big pile of un-needed items from our home and gave them all away on Gumtree. This year we’ve been making numerous trips to the charity shop too, and I’m hoping to keep up with a more minimalist life this year!

There are plenty of ways you can make changes in your home to give the impression of more space too, and give a cleaner, fresher, uncluttered look.

Having light coloured walls, and plenty of natural light coming into the home can make a really big difference. I love the look of these bi fold doors from Everest Home Improvements, which allow you to create a seem less flow from your indoor living area, out to the garden. This would be so nice especially in the summer.

Of course carefully planned storage is a big help in giving the decluttered look too. It’s not always realistic to get rid of everything, especially with a house full of kids, but having it tidily hidden away, out of the eye’s gaze can definitely make a big difference. I’ve made some simple changes to our hall way, adding a new bench with storage baskets that hold all of the kids shoes, book bags and swimming bags and means that we no longer have so much clutter in that area. Since that’s the first thing you see when you come into the home, it’s a big improvement.

Next on my list is a thorough clear out of all of our wardrobes. I like the KonMari method of asking “does it bring you joy?” and if not, it’s got to go! I’m sure this will make loads more space, and ultimately boost all of our moods – as I often find that too much clutter brings me down.

    • Having great storage means that you can sort out all of the clutter. I try to chuck out anything I haven’t used in the past year.

  1. We need to declutter our bedroom – there is stuff piled everywhere (we live in a flat so storage space is at a premium). We did make a start last year and I’m determined we will finish this year as I want the newly freed space for a large bookcase as my books are taking over the flat – boxes everywhere :o)

  2. I always start decluttering after taking our Christmas decorations down – I start with the kids rooms and make room for their new toys by giving their old/un-played with toys to charity or younger cousins.

  3. I have been really ruthless in trying declutter. Moved house last year and thought I had sorted out everything before I moved but clearly not. Each room I am decorating is getting a thorough sort out!!

  7. New Year’s Resolution to declutter all the detritus in our home. I started with my clothes and my partner has followed seeing the difference it has made. I have gone through my wardrobe and drawers 3 times so far! It is a wonderful feeling not having piles of clothes lying about as there is now room to put them away and I still have space. I have avoided 3 drawers as they are full of personal mementos and I will find them more difficult to declutter. Our goal is we each must put out 2 items each day – so far it is going well.

  18. We have been decluttering for the last few months. It involves boxing up unwanted / unnecessary items, not actually throwing them away. Also things like cds and dvds have been taken out of their 100’s of cases and put in cd/dvd wallets saving so much space. The place certainly looks better for it

  19. I have an incentive to declutter to make a permanent home for my sewing machine, instead of it being on the dining table and having to be moved every time we eat there. I think my biggest personal breakthrough has been realising that I don’t have to sell everything I don’t need; if it needs to go, it’s better to get it out of the house rather than necessarily to make its value.

  45. a tidy house gives a tidy mind and efficient house – but this is easier said than done, I have a lot of ‘things’ with an emotional attachment, but you need to be brutal, if you have not looked at it/used it/worn it for over 12 months, then you don’t really need it. Be brave and sell/recycle or dispose of it – but don’t replace it.

I spent the weekend de-cluttering, I emptied the office completely, cleaned it from top to bottom and sorted out what needed to be in my office. Everything else I left on the kids beds along with some bin bags. This morning everything was on the floor but they’ve been warned if they don’t put everything away it’s off to the charity shop, so we’ll see how that goes.

I have a clearout once a year, my kids toys also get sorted through once a year (they decide which ones to keep or give to charity) they love helping other kids who are in more need than them so end up with a big bag of toys each year to give to charity! My motto is if it hasnt been used in the last year it hasnt been missed so it can go! X

  69. Honestly? I don’t have much clutter. I’m good at throwing stuff out if I don’t use it. We also don’t use our garage or loft for storage. If you can put it away in a loft then you don’t actually use/need it. (only exception would be something like a cot if you’re planning more future kids.)

  93. I need to clear a LARGE volume of items recently so started by collecting items that would be suitable for the Syrian Refugee appeal – warm or waterproof clothing, sleeping bags, wellies/boots and any basic toiletries and baby supplies I didn’t need. Then I filled a box for the local charity shop with things I didn’t want but couldn’t sell, also a box for Ebay, and a box for things that belonged to other people that needed to be returned (was surprised at how much went into this box!). Lastly a box for the recycling centre including batteries, broken toys and equipment. Just by compartmentalising one location at a time I was able to make fast decisions and clear a lot in a short space of time.

Try and be disciplined though sometimes getting some quick wins and removing bulky items is good for morale. I try and tackle items rather than rooms eg clothes from all the house today and books from all the house tomorrow. That way you get into a single item decision-making rhythm

Most people (my in laws included) will just throw anything out, but me and him see a potential value to everything. Why throw it out if you can benefit from it and another person can benefit too?

The charity is completely run by volunteers, no-one gets paid. They save dogs from death row at the pound and rely on car boot sales and donations). Many need expensive vet treatments) I intend to work on each room at a time, going through wardrobes, cupboards and drawers, as over the years we have accumulated so much stuff.

It is full of possessions from parents, children that come back from university and put all their suitcases and household goodies in there. There are tins of half used paint, lawn mowers, wood, china and so much more. The things you think will be useful, but never will. So this is the time to blitzi it.
