A couple of weeks ago, we went to see The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre. Created by The Birmingham Repertory Theatre 22 years ago, The Snowman has been delighting young and old alike for 18 years at the Peacock Theatre with its wonderful mix of storytelling, spectacle and magic. Although the show has been running for so long, this is the first time we had been to see it, and the kids and I really enjoyed it.

The show is based on Raymond Briggs’ classic book The Snowman, which along with the Oscar Nominated, BAFTA Award winning animated version, has become a real Christmas classic. I have memories of watching the Snowman on TV at Christmas as a child and it’s great to share the magic of that with the kids, with the live stage version.

The magical stage production features Howard Blake’s timeless musical score played by a live orchestra, and includes the signature song ‘Walking in the Air’ which reached number 3 in the UK charts when sung by choirboy Aled Jones in 1985. This is a such a beautiful classic winter song, and seeing it live on stage is really magical.

The snowman story is told entirely in dance, with very little dialogue but the whole story is conveyed very well without the need for words. The Snowman is the perfect introduction to dance for the very young, and it’s suitable for all ages. We watched with our boys age 4, 5 and 7 but younger children were also in the audience and they enjoyed it too.

I was particularly impressed by the young boy in the show, as he did a great job and carried the show well. It’s always lovely to see children performing so well. The dancers of the show all did a fantastic job too, and we enjoyed all of the different dances particularly in Santa’s lapland scenes, which were beautifully choreographed.
