We are back with another fun winter craft idea for kids. Since it’s the middle of winter now, we couldn’t resist trying out some super cute and easy snowman crafts, using rock painting.

There are so many fun activities to do with kids this time of year, but if you want to keep it simple, here’s one that is great for kids of all ages.

Children will love the idea of creating a snowman, and even better these little guys can be mixed and matched to create all kinds of fun and crazy combinations once you’ve finished painting and drawing.

We have a huge collection of smooth rocks and stones that we have been collecting on each trip to the beach, so I decided to put them to good use and let the kids make their own painted snowmen with them for this simple mix n match stone snowmen activity.

Mix n match stone snowmen winter craft for kids to make and play with

The holiday season is known for many things: lights, decorating the house, giving gifts, and of course having fun.

For kids, it can be a time for them to create some memories that will last a lifetime. One great way is with this simple snowman craft that is perfect for little ones.

With just a few materials, your kids can enjoy creating their own personal snowman to put on display in their homes.

This post features instructions on how to make the perfect winter decoration with this festive craft project.

It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach children about colors, clothing, body parts and facial expressions with this easy DIY activity.

Rocks are so versatile for crafts and this is just one of so many rock activities you could try.

So gather your supplies and follow these steps to make your own painted rocks snowman craft for kids!

Supplies for this Rock Painting Snowman Craft

You’ll only need 3 things to make these painted stone snowmen and you may already have all of them around the house. This is a super simple activity.

  • Stones – We collected loads at the beach to keep for craft projects like these. You can also buy huge bags full at the garden centre very cheaply, and the bag lasts for ages.
  • White Paint – You can use pre mixed poster paint or acrylic paint.
  • Sharpies – My kids favourites are our gold silver and bronze pack.

How to Paint Stone Snowmen

To make the painted rock snowmen, first you’ll need to paint your stones white. They’ll need time to dry, so you can do this part one day and leave the decorating to the next day when the paint will be totally dry.

You can also select stones that are already white, if you want a short cut. Remember the bags of garden centre stones I just mentioned? Yep, you can buy bags of all white – handy tip if you want to save time and get straight to the decorating.

If you’re wanting to leave these painted stones outside afterwards, then using acrylic paint and then sealing with modpodge after you finished decorating is the best way to preserve them for longer.

How to put together the mix and match Snowman craft

First, take two or three stones per snowman – one stone for the head, and one or two for the body.

Then just draw features onto each stone with your sharpies, it can be as simple or as detailed as your kids like so this idea will work for any age of child.

Younger children can draw a basic smilie face, older kids can create a detailed snowman with all kinds of adorable features like a top hat, a fun striped scarf and an orange carrot nose.

We added hats, scarves, buttons for the body and little twig arms, along with of course a carrot for the nose. Kids can add their favorite colors and patterns. See how many different combinations you can come up with.

The children can make all kinds of snowman characters, girl snowmen, boy snowmen, old snow people, baby snowmen, even try making a snowman and a snow dog or all kinds of snow animals. Their creativity is the only limit.

Once you’re done, you can mix and match the bodies with each snowman, or stack them up to build your snowman upwards too.

This mix and match stone snowman craft is a great tactile craft and winter sensory play activity for kids.
