Salt dough crafts are so popular at this time of year. That’s because they make such cute decorations for your tree, and are lovely mementos to keep over the years! Salt dough is easy to make, and pretty durable too. My kids love to make and decorate their own salt dough ornaments, and this Christmas tree shaped one is so cute.

Materials:

1 Cup Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
1/2 Cup Warm Water
Tree Cookie Cutter (or free hand, we did both!)
Wax Paper
Cookie Sheet
Non Toxic Craft Paints
Paint Brushes
Paper Towel
Instructions: How to make your salt dough

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees
In a small bowl, combine the water and salt. Mix until dissolved.
Add the flour a little at time while mixing until a dough forms.
Use your hands to press the dough together if crumbly, work until it comes together smooth.

Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and continue working
Use a rolling pin or large cup to roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
Either free hand or use a cookie cutter to cutout your trees.

If you want a star or additional embellishments on the tree, cut those out now as well.
NOTE* If you plan to hang these, make your holes before baking.
Place the trees onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper.

Lightly press on any stars or addtions that you cut out. Bake for 1 hour or until dry and hard.
Let the salt dough trees dry completely before painting.

After the trees are cooled, paint them as desired! I added a layer of clear glitter paint over mine
and a primitive star!

Try glueing these to a wooden dowel and use as a plant decoration.
They also make a great keepsake gift !
