It’s in the forefront of every parent’s mind – to keep your children safe at all times. Predicting, avoiding and eliminating any possible safety hazards in the home is important, as there are massive risks that many people don’t even know they are taking.
It has been 10 years since the Part P obligations of the Building Regulations for England and Wales came into play, but still many people are unaware of their existence, what they mean and how it affects them. Research undertaken by the UK charity Electrical Safety First, found that 80% of people didn’t know that certain electrical jobs should only be carried out by a registered Electrician.
Electrical Safety First, is a charity dedicated to reducing deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents. Their new online video aims to raise awareness in order to help consumers understand their obligations under Part P of the Building Regulations, together with the importance of using a registered professional Electrician. Users can flick between both good and bad scenarios by pressing “P” on the keyboard. Viewers can observe both potential impacts of the dad’s decision, which is to either replace the fuse box himself or to call a registered Electrician to complete the work – both have very different outcomes.
The campaign highlights that carrying out electrical DIY could mean that you are breaking the law, or worse, it could result in a fatal disaster – with devastating effects on your family.

That ad is very powerful! There are some things we feel comfortable with doing ourselves, like repairing a broken float in our toilet tank. But we are just not comfortable touching anything electrical. Especially in older buildings with outdated and questionably safe wiring!

I agree with you that safety is first when it comes to electrical work. In my opinion, I don’t think that people should do their own electrical work. If you do, like you say, you should get safety training or instruction first. I just prefer to hire an electrician.

I agree with the fact that it can really dangerous to try any kind of electric yourself. Whenever we suffer from any kind of electric emergency in our home, we should hire professionals to do the same.

Electrical safety is very important. Sometimes a job that may seem small and harmless can turn into a big disaster if you do not know what you are doing. Sometimes it’s better to just call the professionals.
Totally agree with this post! If you have a limited knowledge about electrical stuffs, then you should stop doing it yourself and ask for a professional electrician to do the job. Seeing a DIY tutorial online about what to do is not a guaranteed success and it might actually lead to chaos. So better hire an electrician and don’t tinker things by yourself.
