Peppa Pig has a new book out, all about a trip to the Supermarket:
Peppa and her family need something to eat for lunch. It’s time for a trip to the supermarket! Mummy Pig is very keen on just getting the things on her shopping list, but when they get to the checkout, something else has appeared in the trolley…
Let’s Go Shopping Peppa is a fun story featuring our favourite Pig family going through their shopping trip, along with some counting practice and a bit of humour included too.
We’re kicking off a week-long blog tour to celebrate it’s release. I’ll be sharing tips for keeping kids entertained in the supermarket, and there’s also a chance for you to win a copy of the book for your own children, at the end of this post.
My boys enjoyed the story and have enjoyed taking their own shopping lists to the supermarket. It’s a great way to keep them busy in store, and a fun way to talk about different food groups and get them keen to put healthy foods into the trolley.

He was very happy to pick all the items from the shelves and help out when we got to the store too.
When taking all of the children to the supermarket, I find it helps to pick a time when they are not too overtired or restless, and to keep the shopping list to a reasonable length, like Mummy Pig’s. My oldest two boys help to pick the items off the shelf for us, and my youngest chooses whether he wants to sit in the trolley, or walk around and help too.
After they have helped to choose everything that we need, I usually do let them pick a treat or a cake to take home – just like Daddy Pig’s chocolate cake.

I always talk through the shopping list with them so that they can help me choose – if they feel involved they’re less likely to get bored! 🙂
Do it all online, or failing that, I get my toddler to help carry things round for me, it keeps her occupied and away from the magazines and chocolate!

Do it early in the day
Need tips as I have 2 year old twins and its hard work shopping with them!! I normally try get them to find things for me especially when in the fruit and veg section. Helps them with learning names of things and keeps them occupied. Failing that snacks in the changing bag always helps!
Don’t take them hungry or tired, I love supermarkets who have double trolleys or take a sling and carry one of them and put the other one in the trolley
Talk to them about the products and practise counting. Don’t let them get bored.
My youngster just loves to be helpful. So getting her to pass you things to put in the trolley really helps keep her engaged. Sure it takes a bit longer, but everyone comes out happy at the end, and that can’t be a bad thing.
Get them to help by ‘spotting’ the items you need
Engage them in the shopping experience and get them to “help”. I always have a stash of little snacks like raisins that take a while to eat to keep her occupied if all else fails!

Kids love to help so always involve them in the shopping- ” Can you find daddy’s favourite yoghurts “…. ” Can you count 6 apples into the bag?” They’ll gain confidence and pride in their achievements.

Peppa Pig is a family favorite….but because she’s not as mainstream as Dora or any Disney Princess, I wonder if the other shoppers will think it rude when my girls start calling out for Mummy Pig during our adventure!

Don’t take them with you! If it really can’t be bothered then I make sure I have a list which I stick to so it’s quick!

With my older two, I tell them what item we are looking for and get them to help look for it and then we give it to the toddler to put in the trolley (although we have to be careful what we give her as shes not very gentle about putting stuff in!

Lydia & Dominic both write lists and both search for the items while little Seb sits in the trolley playing with a tractor and sometimes eating grapes from a snack box, keeps him quiet. They love shopping! All good fun x
Offer them a comic/magazine at the end, although that can get pricey if you go shopping more than once a week!

No tips, I’d just leave them with a babysitter, much quicker and lighter on the purse

I engaged them by getting them to look for a particular item and then pick it from the shelf and put it in the basket. Then we start over again.
Make a game of it – spot the products or spot the colours etc.

We taking some snacks with us, because my little girl while she’s sitting in the troley and seeing all the yummy stuff around was throwing tantrums that she wants that and that. But having our own little snack helps to take her mind off asking things..

Let them plan a meal! My 5, 7 & 13 yr olds love to plan a meal once a week, they have to work together to sort out what ingredients, and what we’ll need, and I help them make it for their dads friday night treat! Its brilliant, and it makes shopping a lot more fun! x
