It’s time for another fun crafting challenge. You might have noticed over the past couple of months, a group of blogging friends and I have been challenging each other to come up with ideas on different themes. This month we’ve been trying out Veggie stamping crafts and we’d love to challenge you to join us and try out your own crafty ideas with vegetables too. Check the end of the post for more creative veggie ideas from the other Kids Craft Stars.

Veggie stamping with Okra. A fun way for kids to paint

For our veggie stamping craft, we chose okra (aka lady’s fingers, bamia, bhindi or gumbo – depending what you know it as!) We kept it pretty simple by drawing our own colouring page outlines and then just filling them in with the paint and the okra print patterns.

I love the flower-like shape that okra makes when you print it. It’s definitely one of my favourite vegetable patterns.

Using food in play is a good way to get children used to these healthy items, and hopefully get them to consider eating that vegetable later on. I’ll admit, my children won’t eat okra right now, but I love it myself so maybe one day they will – so that I can cook an okra dish and know that everyone in the house would be happy to have it!

We made lots of different Okra stamped pictures. Of course we had to make some flowers, since the Okra shape is so much like a flower itself

We also made butterflies by stamping on one side of the picture and then folding over to make a matching print on the other side.

We did some Spring bunnies too, and some letter practice for the children’s names

In English and in Arabic too

  1. Love this! Okra is so pretty when used as a stamp, almost like a flower. I tried my hand at potato stamping for a rainbow project with my toddler, but this list makes me want to try them all! Thanks for adding this to the Spring Craft Blog Hop! #SCBH2015

  2. That looks amazing! As a science teacher I used to do “fruit dissections” with my little students and it was always startling to see the patterns and shapes hidden inside plants. We never did vegetables, and now I’m sad seeing how great the okra looks when cross sectioned. I can see this being a huge hit with my own son when we study plants! Thanks for posting!
