We had lots of fun making this pop up puppets spring craft one afternoon during half term. Once the puppets had been made and decorated, the children had even more fun and giggles playing with them and making their animals pop up out of their hiding places.

We made this craft using a handy kit from Baker Ross. We are part of the Baker Ross Blogger Network and love using their products often!

You can make a similar craft at home with supplies you may have on hand in the kitchen or craft cupboard (or adapt this idea for other themes) but what I love about the Baker Ross kits is that everything you need for each project comes together so you can quickly grab a kit for each child and get crafting without hunting around for various supplies.

So to make this pop up puppets craft, you will need:

Either:

Or:

  • 1 Paper cup
  • 1 Straw or plastic stick
  • Card to draw your animal shapes
  • Glue
  • 2 x Googley eyes
  • Decorations for your cup. You could use packs of foam adhesive stickers from Baker Ross.

The above is for 1 puppet, so to make 4 or however many you need just multiply.

How to make the pop up puppet

First, you need to make the puppet by sticking the back and front of your animal around the straw. Place the back down on the table, then place the straw on top, and then the front of the animal to seal. The front of the Baker Ross bunny and chick are foam stickers, so this was really easy for even my youngest to do himself.

Next, stick googly eyes on to your animal. We used glue dots but use whatever type of glue you prefer.

You could add more features to the animals face with a black pen if you wish, or leave it plain.

Now you’re ready to decorate your paper cup. We used the spring time flowers and patterns that came within the Baker Ross set and again these are adhesive foam stickers so really easy for kids to use without any assistance. My boys love this since they can take full control over their craft and have no need to ask with help for anything, so they feel really proud of their end results.

The cups look bright and cheerful with all their decoration.

To create the base of the puppet, you need to push the straw through the base of the paper cup to allow it to move up and down – and your puppet is finished!

It’s a really simple but effective craft that suited my three boys 3, 5 and 6 very well.

I’m sure we will make these again in future. Once the puppets are finished, you can use them for storytelling and role playing or for listening games.

  1. These look lovely and I’d imagine easy to make for even very small children! I love doing crafts with my boys, although now they are 9 and 10 it tends to have to be minecraft related these days!
