The thought of your baby choking is one of the most worrying things for a parent. Do you know how to stop a baby from choking, if you ever found yourself in this situation?
St John’s Ambulance shared that over 40% of the parents they spoke to have witnessed their own baby choke and when they quizzed them on the first aid, they found that almost four-fifths don’t know what to do in this situation. That is pretty scary! To help the information stick into parents minds, they have made a short video, complete with celebrity voices.
How to stop a baby from choking
If your baby is choking:
- Lay them face down on your thigh
- Give up to 5 back blows
- If that doesn’t work, turn them over and give up to 5 chest thrusts – until the airway is clear
- If that still doesn’t work, call an ambulance.

A great video thank you! I trained in first aid during my training as a nursery nurse but cannot remember what I learned now as it was over 20 years ago! I defo think every parent should know what to do if they are ever in that situation.
Really helpful, one of my biggest fears is having to deal with one of my kids choking
I learnt first aid at school which is, hum, a few years ago and I’ve been trying to find a first aid course which doesn’t a fortune, and failed. So at least I know what do to if people choke. Although I do remember being surprised at just how hard you need to hit, especially with babies

Both of my boys have have choking incidences as babies one with a piece of banana the other with some pasta. My mum is a nurse so I was bought up knowing basic first aid – thank goodness! If I hadn’t have known before I was pregnant I would have gone to a course or such to find out! This kind of information is so important for parents, or any one, ot have!
I hope I never have to encounter anyone choking, it’d be terrifying.

Everyone should do a bit of first aid very important
Luckily I’ve never experienced a child choking but I did do a St Johns Ambulance First Responder course for work a few years ago. Although some details will have changed it has made me feel more confident to deal with any accidents which my kids have experienced, from cuts & bumps to suspected broken arm & more serious cuts.

The information is presented in a way that’s easy to understand. It’s very useful to know, although we all we’ll never need it. I don’t understand why First Aid isn’t on the national curriculum. Let’s face it, it’s much more useful to most of us, than learning a Modern Foreign Language, or a Humanities subject.
My daughter is due to have her first baby and this is a real worry for mums, any thing that could teach someone how to cope in that situation is a great idea
