Eid-ul-Adha is on it’s way! The children always get very excited and we usually like to decorate the house to help get in the festive mood. This Eid the children wanted to put some decorative lights, not just string lights but candle style lights.
They have been decorating some small tea light holders with porcelain pens and we saved some glass jars to make DIY Eid candle jars. The one shown here is made with a jam jar, but we also saved and used jars from sauces. We have a lot of small glass gu pots too but found that they are too shallow for the light to shine through with the candles that we were using.
To make these simple candle jars all you need is a jar, of the types mentioned above, and some glass pens.
These are the glass pens that we used from Baker Ross, and they are the same ones which you can use for porcelain so it’s a multipurpose item.
Glitter Porcelain and Glass Paint Pens
There are 5 in the pack, one must have been in-use by one of the kids when I took the picture. There are lots of colours and styles available for these pens on the Baker Ross site. If you’re using on porcelain and want to make the effect permanent, then you can bake in the oven (e.g for decorating mugs). With our candle jars, since we won’t be washing it we just left it to dry and the colour has stayed fixed.
We just added some simple lines, dots and stars to make a pattern and I wrote the words Eid Sa3eed on it (happy Eid) on each side. This is a very quick and easy craft to do. Once the pattern has been added, then we left it to dry for a couple of hours.
Once it’s starting to get darker, after maghrib time or so, then you can add some tealight candles inside to see the light shining through the newly decorated glass jar.
We’ve used LED tealights from Baker Ross. I would rather use these than real flames. Since there is no fire risk, we can just turn them on and not worry, especially with small children around. These have actually been really handy since we have had 4 power cuts in the past 2 weeks, so I was really glad to have these LED candles in my craft box since I had forgotten to keep batteries in the torch!!
I loved painting glass as a child, it was one of my favourite crafts. Using the glass pens makes it really easy so this is a great Eid craft for all ages.
