Jam tarts are one of the simplest treats that even toddlers can bake, so it was an ideal option for Mr R and Mr T to get together and bake some jam tarts for Mr Z’s little birthday tea. We used Flora which is great for baking, especially with their new baking block, and they were all eaten up within a few minutes!
Ingredients
- Plain flour – 225g
- Flora Great for Baking Block – 110g (Flora Buttery or Flora Gold will also work well)
- Sugar – 80g
- 1 egg (large)
- A little milk
- Jam
Method – How to make Easy Jam Tarts with your kids
First make the sweet pastry cases:
- Weigh out the flour and Flora and rub them together into a crumb consistency
- Add all of the sugar and mix
- Add your egg and mix again, adding a little milk if needed to combine the mixture into a soft dough.
Once your pastry dough is done, you will need to cut out the dough into round shapes for the bottom of the tart. You can use any pastry or biscuit cutter, or if you don’t have one that’s quite right just use a glass. Ask your toddler to be careful with it, Mr R & Mr T were fine using the glass with supervision.
If your toddlers shapes are really uneven or mis-shapen, you might have to rearrange a bit while they are not looking. But even if they are not the most professional looking (ours definitely aren’t) they will still taste great and have that home made look!
All the rolling and cutting of pastry is a fun way to work on their fine motor skills. The boys noticed the similarity between the pastry dough and playdough and had lots of fun rolling and making their circles.
Then all that’s left is for the children to spoon in the jam! You can use any flavour of jam, and lemon curd or chocolate spread also work well. We went with strawberry jam. Try not to over fill too much as the jam can bubble out of the tart if you do.
Once they’re all prepared just bake at gas mark 4 for 15-20 minutes or until they look done.
Perfect for a family birthday tea!
The Flora Great for Baking Block is perfect for all types of cakes and bakes. It has the rich taste of Flora and makes lighter, fluffier cakes so you can easily whip up homemade treats the whole family can enjoy.
There’s no need for scales as it has 50g markers on-pack, and you can use it straight from the fridge. It contains 75% vegetable oil (of which 38% is sunflower oil) offering a great baking alternative to butter.

Love those little hands making those jam tarts. I’m getting less OCD about my kids baking – they love it! Don’t forget you can add them to #bakeoftheweek x
thanks Helen, I will definitely come and link up! 🙂
I had not try to use flora butter for cooking. I always only think it best for bread. Now I will need to use it to bake.
Those jam tarts looks yummy. I haven’t made them for years.
They’re great jam tarts – always so much nicer when you make them yourselves 🙂
YUM – these look delicious! And looks like everyone had a fun time making them too 😉
