Mr Z has been really interested in the world cup this year, so we thought of making a simple Pom Pom shooter as a world cup craft, we use the pom poms as footballs (soccer ball) and shoot them into our goal. It’s a very simple and quick craft but loads of fun!
How to make a pom pom shooter
You will need:
- Paper or plastic cups
- Balloons (not blown up)
- Pom Poms
- Scissors
We also added some Duck Tape. You don’t need to, but we thought it might help the shooters to last longer and we have been loving Duck tape lately. We used England flag cups for the world cup theme. Sadly a couple of days later, and now England are out of the world cup already! Oh well!
Method:
1. Cut a hole in the bottom of the cup. I’ve seen people recommend to just chop the bottom off, but I think this way looks neater. We left the sides fully intact and just removed the base of the cup.
2. Take your balloon, tie it up at the end (still unblown) and then chop off the tip of the balloon
3. Take the balloon and stretch the cut open balloon end over the cut open cup end.
Your pom pom shooter is done! That’s all you need to do, and then you can place a pom pom inside the cup, pull pack the tied end of the balloon and the pom pom will shoot out. They go pretty far, it’s great fun!
If you are worried that the balloon could accidentally pop off the end of the cup then adding Duck tape could make it just a little more secure. The balloons we used are a bit unusual because they are neon balloons they’re smaller than normal and not quite as flexible, so we thought we’d better be safe than sorry and just add some tape. It’s also an extra decoration, Mr Z enjoyed choosing Duck tape colours to compliment the balloon
Once you add the tape, they should last for ages! The world cup cups that we used (available from Asda) are pretty strong cardboard, which also helps. You can use them for all sorts of games like shooting up into the sky, or each taking a pom pom shooter and racing who’s goes the furthest. We also made a goal for the pom pom shooters, using Duck Tape and pipe cleaners. Look out for the goal tutorial soon!

What a simple fun idea – I wish I had seen this about 10 years ago, we would have definitely made these. Sadly at 15, 18 & 19 I think my bundles of joy are a little bit old for this now (having said that, my daughter will be looking after some of my brothers little ones for some days over the holidays, this could be exactly the kind of thing she uses to keep them busy!
