I’m joining in with the new Alphabet Photo Project over at Podcast Dove to capture a photograph for each letter of the alphabet.
Since we have been spending so much time at the beach, I decided to go for “”A” is for “At the beach.”
I asked for the boys help on the project so Mr Z drew lots of “A”s in the sand for me to photograph, first with his fingers and then he realised he could get neater results if he used a stone from the beach for his mark making.
It’s always fun to practise writing the letters in different textures and with different mediums. After we got home we made some more As using stones we had collected from a previous time at the beach. This took a little more thinking about for the boys, as they had to think how best to arrange the stones. Mr Z and Mr R worked on this together.
I am really wanting to reinforce the letters with Mr T and Mr R at the moment. Mr Z knows them of course as he is older, but he is still happy to join in and he loves to help the younger boys to learn which is lovely – I love to see my children helping each other out. Taking a letter each week will be a great way to make sure that the younger boys have covered each letter and I’m sure Mr Z can help me to come up with some more photo ideas each week to get his creativity going!
I know there are some differences of opinion as to whether Letter of the Week is a good way to teach the alphabet, but we won’t be focusing only one the one letter in isolation. It’s one of many activities in their week and I think it will work really well for us.
I drew a bubble letter A template on paper for each of the boys and asked them to decorate them with an “A is for At The Beach” theme. We did these pretty basic just with felt pens, but it was a fun activity to keep them busy while I prepare their dinner and was another chance for the younger boys to reinforce the letter shape. Mr T practised copying lot and lots of letter A on the back of his sheet too which is great!
Mr T’s “A” is a treasure map. He loves treasure maps – I guess it is a little bit beach themed since pirates are normally hunting for treasure on a beachy treasure Island.
Mr R’s is coloured in blue and yellow for an “at the beach theme”.
Mr Z decorated his letter “Alif” in Arabic instead and then decided to write a list of easy, medium and hard words for the letter A.
In hindsight, I probably should have saved the beach theme for the letter B! Once I started trying to think of things at the beach that start with A, there are not that many! Amusements.. Arcades…maybe an albatross?!?! I’ll be a little more careful with my theme selection next time!

Sounds like you have been working hard on the letter A! Great beach photos but yes, maybe you should have save the beach for ‘B’! Will look forward to what you are going to come up with!
