read for my school jeremy strong giveawayPearsons have launched a new reading challenge for school children aged 7-13 which can be found at www.readformyschool.co.uk. They are challenging children to read many books as they can in the next 2 months, either online from a free digital library, or offline. There are 8 categories of books on the Read For My School website and children are encouraged to read at least one from each category:

  • Laugh out Loud/Humour
  • Film and TV
  • Historical
  • Mystery and Horror
  • Real Life
  • Adventure
  • Sci-fi and Fantasy
  • Animals and The Wild.

A review of last year’s competition found that Laugh out loud humour was the most popular category, with over 81,000 books read.  A massive range of e books is available for free on the website, so it makes it very easy for children to take part and choose something to suit their interests.

Jeremy Strong My Brother's Famous Bottom

International bestselling children’s author Jeremy Strong is an ambassador for the 2014 Read for My School competition.  The writer, who has published over 30 humorous books including My Brother’s Famous Bottom and The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour Dog, said:

Adding a sense of fun to stories is one of the best ways to turn a child into a reader and gain a love of reading.  Funny stories are hugely effective in creating life-long readers. This is apparent from the very positive letters I regularly receive from parents, teachers and children themselves.”

As part of the competition, children have the option to enter a short writing competition by writing a letter to the children in Tanzania who will benefit from Book Aid International’s Library in a Box programme.

  6. my children are currently big fans of Winnie the Witch – especially her expressive cat Wilbur! Think they’re too little to like particular categories (they’re 3 and 4).
