I loved writing poems as a child, so it’s great to pass that on to Z and what better inspiration is there than the changing seasons? As Z is now 5 and getting much more confident in his writing it seemed like a fun activity for us to do together after school. This Autumn poem is Z’s first ever poem, and I may be biased as a mum but I think he did brilliantly with it! We decided to collect some leaves on the way home so that we could decorate the poem and give it that unmistakeable Autumn feel.
I helped Z with the idea of making our poem an Acrostic. For anyone who does not remember these from school, it’s when the first letter of each line spells out a word when you read down the page. Of course our word had to be Autumn! The acrostic format can make it easier for little ones in case they can’t think what to write, the starting letter can at least give them a prompt. I love that Acrostic poems can be as simple or as elaborate as you like – even one descriptive word on each line can be quite effective!
Here’s our finished poem, decorated with Autumn leaves that we found out on our walks. Sticking the real leaves on to decorate was a lot of fun and so effective, but if you don’t have any leaves to hand then why not try cutting out some paper leaves instead? (download your leaf templates here)

Autumn leaves crunching
Under your feet.
Toffee apples and fireworks
Under the evening sky.
Muddy wellies splashing.
Now it is Autumn.
