As part of the Parragon Book Buddies scheme, we get the chance to try out and review some of their lovely children’s titles. This months book was Three Little Dinosaurs by Charles Fuge.
This is a great picture book about three little dinosaurs called Scratch, Lofty and Sniff who want to learn to fly. They have heard about one of the dinosaurs Terry Dactyl who is able to do this, so they try their best with jumping and flapping but don’t seem to be getting anywhere – until Terry Dactyl swoops along and gives them all a ride on her back!
It is a sweet story and the three little dinosaurs characters are very likeable as they are very enthusiastic and cute. They are not scary at all, which sometimes Mr Z does worry about with dinosaurs.
The pictures are large and appealing. It’s a cute illustration style with a round soft cartoony feel, but with plenty of detail included in each scene. Both the text and illustrations are done by Charles Fuge. We have had other books by Charles Fuge before like Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball, and I do always like the style of his illustrations.
The amount of text on the page was just right for my children. Both my 3 and 5 year old listened to and enjoyed the story. Each page was short enough for my 3 year old to keep his attention throughout but not so short that it became too boring and simple for them.
I would say it is a suitable bedtime story for children of around age 2.5-5 years. My just turned 2 year old was not able to sit and concentrate throughout the whole story but he has really enjoyed looking at the the dinosaur pictures. He loves to point at them and say raaarrr rrarrrrr like a dinosaur!
